How Ray Hooker Turned a Hobby Into a Legacy at Indian River Distillery
If you’ve ever wondered what happens when curiosity meets craftsmanship, just take a trip to Indian River Distillery here in Vero Beach. We sat down with Ray Hooker, a third-generation local who turned a passion project into one of Vero’s most unique and community-rooted businesses.
Ray’s story starts with a mower, a trailer, and a lot of determination. For 14 years, he ran a lawn, landscape, and pest control company before trading in the Florida sun for a still and some seriously good spirits. What began as a “possibly, allegedly” backyard experiment with friends turned into a full-fledged distillery. Built on boldness, heritage, and heart. ♥️
🥃 Why Whiskey? Why Vero?
Ray isn’t just passionate about spirits, he’s passionate about the right spirits, and making them well. He walked us through how spirits are made, what defines whiskey, and why the base ingredient matters (did you know bourbon has to be at least 51% corn and made in the U.S.?). His approach? Simple, high-quality cocktails crafted with care. No gimmicks, just good drinks and great stories.
One thing that sets Indian River Distillery apart is how much of Vero Beach is woven into it, literally. Ray named “Ray Lynn’s Reserve” after one of the legendary Ashley Gang members, tying his spirits to Florida’s forgotten history. As he put it, “People look at Florida as Disneyland or Miami, but there’s so much more to this state—and we want to tell those stories.”
A Family Business That Feels Like Family
Indian River Distillery isn’t just a solo mission. It’s a family affair with Ray’s wife, Mandy, and their son, Chandler helping shape the business. Their tasting room staff: Bill, Michael, and Kelsey feel more like extended family than employees. Each one brings unique experience and creativity to the bar, especially since Florida law means they can only serve what they make in-house. That forces them to innovate with every pour, and it shows.
Distilling Purpose, Not Just Spirits
Ray’s heart for Vero is clear. Whether he’s educating customers on how to properly enjoy a neat pour, honoring Florida’s rebellious past through his branding, or simply staying true to his word, everything he does reflects a deep respect for the community. “Vero Beach is the world’s largest Mayberry,” he told us. “If you don’t do what you say you’re going to do, everyone’s going to hear about it.”
His biggest lessons in business? Communicate your vision. Don’t ride your business, drive it. And yes, write down the plans in your head (because your team can’t read your mind, no matter how good they are).
Closing Thought
From handmade bourbon to handcrafted business values, Ray Hooker reminds us that building something meaningful takes more than just good ideas, it takes consistency, community, and a little rebellion. If you haven’t visited Indian River Distillery yet, stop in, sip something special, and learn a little more about the Florida you didn’t read about in the travel brochures.
